EFFECTS OF COLOR
A MAJOR CONSIDERATION OF CARPET SELECTION
The selection of color will usually outweigh all other considerations in terms of importance. This is a personal choice that no one can decide for you, but we want you to be aware of the many effects the color of your carpet will create. You should also remember that a carpet purchase is usually a long-term investment and you want to be able to live with your choice for the long run.
CARPET PULLS THE ROOM TOGETHER
Floors and walls are the largest decorative areas in a room, but the cost and ease of painting walls is much less restrictive than changing a carpet. Since everything sits on the floor, the carpet is the one decorating factor that will draw all of the other items together. This should be kept in mind so that existing furniture can play a proper influence in the selection of the carpet. If the room is being entirely redone, start with the floor and build off of it with selection of furniture. The furniture may be the dominant decorating element or you may wish for the carpet to be the stronger accent, but in any case, be sure they don’t conflict!
COLOR CHOICE AND SPACE PERCEPTION
The use of color can alter the perception of the size of a room. Lighter colors of carpet will make smaller rooms appear larger. This becomes more effective when the walls are also light. Conversely, deeper colored carpets can reduce the feeling of space and make the room more intimate. A single color installed through connected rooms creates a feeling of continuity and expansion. Contrasting colors may be used to divide or separate inter-connected areas and define individuality. This same effect can be created by using different textures of a common coloration.
EFFECTS OF TEXTURE
The texture of a carpet can also affect the depth of color appearance. A smoother, uniform surface will appear lighter than the same color used in a textured finish. Textures such as multi-level loops or friezes can also make a solid coloration appear to have a tone-on-tone effect. (See CARPET STYLES) While this may be a desirable effect, be sure that textured styles are of sufficient quality for the area of use. High traffic patterns may crush and smooth out the traffic lanes and cause these areas to revert to a more solid, uniform color appearance.
COLOR CAN AFFECT PERCEPTION OF ROOM TEMPERATURE
The use of color can also help to alter the apparent climate or exposure of a room. In northern exposures, reds, yellows and browns will warm the appearance. In southern exposures, blues, greens and violets can have a cooling effect. Mood can also be affected or altered by color. Warm reds and oranges set an active theme, while cool blues and greens create a quieter setting.
EFFECT OF LIGHTING ON CARPET COLOR
The color of a carpet (and sample used for selection) can be affected by several factors including the lighting in a room, existing wall and furniture colors and exposure. It is critical that the samples being considered be viewed in the rooms where they are to be installed. The appearance of a sample in the retail store is not necessarily the same as it will be in your home.
